Who We Are

Gamagara is a unique blend of bustling towns, fertile farmland, and thriving mining operations. Our 5 towns – Kathu, Shesheng, Dibeng, Dingleton, and Olifantshoek – each bring their own character and charm to our municipality.

At the heart of Gamagara is the town of Kathu, the largest of our municipalities and the administrative center. Kathu is a thriving hub of commerce, industry, and culture, with a rich history tied to the iron ore mine at Sishen. This mine not only provides jobs to thousands of people but also led to the establishment of the town itself.

Olifantshoek, our second largest town, is located along the Gamagara River to the northwest of Kathu. This charming town offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and scenic beauty.

Dingleton, the smallest of our 5 towns, is located in the center of the municipality’s mining operations and offers a unique glimpse into the workings of South Africa’s mining industry.

At Gamagara Local Municipality, we are proud of our rich history and diverse communities. We invite you to explore our towns, meet our friendly residents, and discover the many wonders of our municipality for yourself.
